THREE MONTHS STRONG!

The site is based on the lives of original characters who are sports entertainers / athletes. Beautiful Strangers has a more character-based approach. It dives deep into the stories on a wrestler's life both on and off-screen.

Set in the backdrop of a wrestling promotion, Worldwide Wrestling Force or the WWF, we will provide avenues for characters to be portrayed in different perspectives and platforms. From the on-screen persona often called as "gimmicks", the hardships of the independent scene, to sky-rocketing their careers, and dealing with backstage politics. We even offer the opportunity to portray the minds behind the scenes. The struggles to become a wrestler and to run a wrestling promotion in the modern world is a genre never fully explored- and it could mean a dosage of creativity. From portraying top wrestlers, aspiring athletes, business executives, celebrities etc- the opportunities in an industry with so many blurred lines cannot be clearer than ever.

From the popularity of zubaz in the 80’s to the surge in popularity of wrestling t-shirts in the 90’s, wrestling and fashion trends have always had a unique relationship with one another. A few us here at Manic Mod have been watching wrestling, in part, for the ring attire since the days of Ric Flair. These days, we’ve been known to office conversations about the wardrobes of Lewis Young, Bradley Logan, Bianca Banks, and Ryland Roundtree. I met up with the latter of those four to discuss everything from what he’s going to be rocking this summer, how he goes about picking out his ring attire, his personal workout routine, his favorite cities he’s visited, to favorite wrestling attires of all time.

Check out the preview of the article and few photos below!

What struck me the most about the twenty-six year old superstar, was how much more calm and down-to-earth he is when he’s not in character. As we sat in a café in Seattle, he greeted several female fans with hugs and even gave a pair of Canadian fans who drove in specifically to see the show advice on cool spots to hang out in Seattle. When we got settled one, of the first things we chatted about was WWF Champion Lewis Young’s spread in GQ Magazine in February with the superstar admitting, “I definitely want that blazer. It needs to find its way to my closet immediately”.

When I shared with the Portland native how much we at Manic Mod enjoyed his style in the ring and out of it, he expressed genuine surprise at the WWF Universe’s reactions to his wardrobe. “I’ve always enjoyed clothes and buying them and putting things together, but I’ve never really felt good at. I’ve been dressing the same way for years, and I think whatever I’ve been doing is apparently in style now. I have no idea what I'm going to do when trends change.”.

When asked about his workout routine, the superstar surprised me by revealing, “I don’t really step foot into gyms, to be honest. There’s a lot of grunting and hyper-masculine posturing that I’d really rather avoid, so I mostly workout in parks, in nature. I’m training or sparring or something like that, almost all of my activity is outdoors. I don’t think I’d do it, otherwise”.

One of my favorite parts of the interview was when the rookie wrestler shared his packing strategy before he goes on a trip, “You’d think that someone who travels as much as I do would have it down to a science, by now. I hate to admit this to someone who likes what I wear, but I just kind of throw things in my bag and I see what works when I get there. Sometimes, people are like…’that’s a nice outfit, I never would’ve thought to put those things together’, and I’m thinking, ‘Neither did I until they were the only things left in my suitcase’. Between you and me, though, I think this lets me buy things without feeling guilty about it! I like to be smart about how I spend things because you never know how things will turn out, but clothes, man, they get me every time”.

Clothes get me every time too, Ryland! Check out more in April’s Edition of Manic Mod, on newsstands now!

::The scene opens to a rather modest looking interview set with Ryland and an unknown interviewer, possibly new to the WWF, sitting across from him. The two are seated on a bright white sofa against a black backdrop. The 26 year old superstar is wearing a brimmed hat, which is starting to become staple in his in-ring and backstage wardrobe lately. After a few seconds of getting a wide shot of the two sitting next to one another, the camera zooms in until it’s close up on the two of them.::

Interviewer: Hi, Ryland. I’m glad you could make the time to join me. I noticed on your Instagram that you’re pretty excited to be here in Seattle. That’s quite the change from all of the other cities we’ve visited.

Ryland: I like Seattle the city…not its residents. And especially not its residents who are wrestling fans.

Interviewer: Oh, for moment there I thought I’d found a thing that you didn’t hate.

Ryland:*extended silence* I just said I don’t hate Seattle…was that supposed to be funny?

Interviewer: It was a joke! Ryland, you have to admit you complain a lot. You don’t like wrestling fans, you don’t like people who drive cars, you don’t like television, you don’t like people who don’t recycle, you don’t like meat…I think the WWF Universe would like to hear about the things you DO like. What makes Ryland Roundtree happy?

Ryland: Wrestling fans are dumb. Cars are nothing but state sanctioned environmental warfare. Television is brain-rotting garbage. People who don’t recycle are terrorists. And most importantly, meat is murder. I like bicycles and vegan ice cream and domestic beer. There. Three things that make me happy. Now the masses can start buying them and ruining it for the rest of us.

Interviewer: It’s nice to hear that you don’t hate everything. Wait…vegan…ice cream?

Ryland: Yes, vegan ice cream. But I assume you didn’t bring me here to discuss my eating habits.

Interviewer: No, not at all. We’re going to bookmark that vegan ice cream point and come back to it. Tonight, you’re wrestling one of WWF’s most promising talents, Joey Bryant.

Ryland: Most promising talents? Is he? Is he really?

Interviewer: I would say so. He’s been impressive since he debuted here. He possess a stellar move-set and is a really entertaining watch. Many are predicting that he’s going to be a future face of the company some day.

Ryland: Are they? Are they really?

Interviewer: Are you saying you disagree? Because his supporters have been very vocal with their predictions of future success.

Ryland: I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with anything. I just didn’t realize people thought he’d amount to anything. I try not spend too much time on the internet...it’s just as bad as television. What do YOU think about Joey Bryant?

Interviewer:…you hate the internet too!? Okay, I think he’s an exciting performer and hard worker. He’s been getting better. And, I noticed he’s gained a bit of muscle recently. Obviously a result of all of his hard work.

Ryland:…A sign that HE’s been working hard or that his pharmacist has been working overtime?

Interviewer: Are you suggesting that a fellow WWF superstar is on steroids?

Ryland: I didn’t suggest anything. I merely asked a question. It’s you, ma’am, who have jumped to spreading wild, unsubstantiated rumors. Where did you get your journalism degree?

Interviewer: You made a crack about his Pharmacist!!

Ryland: If I were Joey, I’d take legal action. Just because his vein-to-skin ratio is the exact of opposite of what it should be doesn’t mean anything. I mean…he suddenly gets a little bit of acne scarring and people accuse him of juicing. The pro-wrestling rumor mill has no chill.

Interviewer: Wait...but what did you mean by referring to his pharmacist?

Ryland: I was simply suggesting that he’s a healthy young man. And that, possibly, modern medicine played a part in that. It was you, ma’am, who brought up steroids. If I was going to insult him it would be much more creative than that. I’d pick on his ridiculous tattoos, his clothes, his 7th grade reading level, the nickname G.I. Joey…his haircut. Those are things I would make fun of. I would never, neeeever suggest that the one of the WWF’s golden boys gained dozens of pounds over the course of a few short months with the help of a little vitamin S.

Interviewer: That sounds like sarcasm, Ryland.

Ryland: Does it? Does it reaaally? Do you even know what that word means?

Interviewer: I’m a journalist. Of course I know what it means.

Ryland: A journalist? Are you sure? Where’s the journalistic ethics in sitting across from me and aggressively pushing a slanderous agenda since we started this interview!? You’re dragging a fellow superstar and a man who risked his life to serve our country through the mud!

Interviewer: You’re the one who suggested he was on steroids! You pretty much said he was juicing!

Ryland: But did I? Or did you, in your headline-hungry haze, just take my innocent comment out of context for clicks and views?

Interviewer: I love Joey Bryant! I would never do that!

Ryland: Do you? Do you really? You love him so much that you’re willing to throw him under the bus to further your career? Ma’am, I am disgusted and I must bid you good day.

Interviewer: I didn’t do anything!

Ryland: Of course you didn’t. Good day, ma’am. Don’t worry, maybe there are shots out there you can take to make you better at your job too.

Interviewer: You just did it again!

Ryland: I said, ‘Good day’!!

::Ryland dramatically disconnects the mic from his collar and storms off of the set, leaving his interviewer bewildered and confused at the string of events that just occurred. She eventually remembers that the camera is still rolling and looks into the lens and smiles half-heartedly as the scene fades to black. ::

“How Soon Is Now” by The Smiths blares out of the arena sound system as grey and yellow lights fill the air. Ryland Roundtree steps out onto the stage and scoffs at the mostly booing audience that greets him. Missing the bicycle that’s usually ever-present during his entrances, the newcomer strolls down the walkway as he give the audience every bit of the vitriol that they’re sending his way. As Ryland gets to the area where the ramp meets the flat space outside of the ring, a young girl slips past the barricade and hugs the superstar’s leg. Ryland, without missing a beat, picks the young girl up and hands her back to her father. Ryland then removes his brim hat from his head and places it onto her head. He smiles at her for a split second before walking forward and sliding into the ring. Ryland grabs the microphone from Horace Broker, and looks out into the audience.

Ryland Roundtree: So… counting and discernment aren’t really things wrestling fans or television fanatics are known for, so you guys haven’t realized this yet but I, Ryland Roundtree, haven’t lost a single televised matched the entire time I’ve been here in the WWF. I have taken down legends, I’ve taken down mediocre workers on their way towards retirement, I’ve taken down so-called faces of the organization, and I’ve taken down some of the most intimidating men in that locker room. And not only did I beat them, I made them submit. And here’s the thing; when you look at the list of all of the men I’ve defeated and you look at my opponent tonight...there’s a very obvious shift if the type of athlete we’re dealing with.

Ryland Roundtree: Brad, do you mind if I call you Brad? Brad, in spite of this being my first time wrestling against someone I’m more experienced than, I’m not going to take it easy on you. I’m not going to get complacent and let my guard down. You came out here a few weeks ago and said that opening matches were beneath you. You claim to have turned a new leaf and you want us to think that you’re no longer the guy who comes out to the ring with your smartphone and your fuzzy phone cover and takes duck-lipped selfies like a Kardashian. You, Brad, want us to believe that underneath your Scary Spice, Jem and the Holograms ring attire is an athlete that we should take seriously. So tonight, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m going to go into this match like I’m facing a credible threat…and then I’m going to embarrass you like the joke you are. Don’t worry, though. After I humiliate you, you can take comfort in the fact that you and your duck lips have more followers on Instagram.

Ryland tosses the microphone back to Horace and removes his jacket. The audience, still not pleased with his presence is still booing him, but not as loudly as they were before he started speaking. Ryland moves into a stance suggesting he’s prepared for battle and waits for his opponent's entrance music to hit.

Sully: Welcome to the WKYJ Sports Radio morning show….St. Louis’ one and only sports talk morning show. I’m your host Damien Sullivan better known as Sully and my love cohost Tricia Dennison is here as well. How’s it going, Tris?

Tris: I’m living the dream, Sully. Living the dream. I’m excited about our guest…

Sully: As anyone who’s anyone knows, the WWF’s going to be in town tonight and we’ve snagged one of its rising stars to come and sit down with us this morning. Ryland Roundtree, say ‘Hi’ to your adoring public.

Ryland: I don’t know if ‘adoring’ is the right word for my public, but 'Heeeyy, St. Louis',

Tris: I think you’re so good at being a badd guy that a lot of people actually like you. That’s why I like you. Do you ever feel bad for being mean to fans?

Ryland: Most people give it right back to me…I feel terrible when I have to be mean to kids who don’t quite get that I’m putting on an act. Last week, I called a six year old who tried to touch my hair ‘typhoid mary’ before telling her to keep her filthy hands away from my body. It wasn’t my finest moment.

Tris: *laughs* ‘Typhoid Mary!?’ I doubt she even knows who that was. It’ll give her a good story to tell in the future. We like to start things off by asking a few basic sports questions so our listeners can get to know you better as a sports fan. Some of our fans take this very seriously so answer very carefully. Are you ready?

Ryland: I was until you put all that pressure are me. Are there going to people waiting for me in the parking lot if I mess this up?

Sully: I’m not saying that it’s happened before, but I’m not saying that hasn’t happened before either. I’m going to ask you questions and you answer with the first thing that comes to mind. If you pause more than ten seconds, we’ll ring the buzzer and head to the next question.

Ryland: *laughs* Great, bring on the questions, man.

Sully: Who were you rooting for during the SuperBowl?

Ryland: Missy Elliot.

Sully: *laughs* Favorite NFL Team?

Ryland: Uh…I literally don’t have one.

Sully: Favorite college football team?

Ryland: Theeee Oregon State University. I’ve never been to an entire football game, though.

Sully: Favorite Wrestling match of all time?

Ryland: Uh…Oh, God. Rey Misterio, Jr. vs. Juventud Guerrera at ECW’s Big @$$ Extreme Bash. Wait…I can’t say ass, can I?

Tris: *laughs* Not at all. Favorite WWF Diva?

Ryland: Rochelle Taylor.

Tris: Favorite WWF Superstar that’s not you?

Ryland: Cory Chevelle.

Tris: Name a wrestler you’d love to have a match with.

Ryland: RAGNARÖK!

Tris: Screw, marry, kill; Deacon Wolfe, Chanel Carter, & Cara

Ryland: I…Uh….I would marry Chanel, because she seems fun….yeah, I got nothing else.

Sully: *laughs* You survived man, it wasn’t that bad, was it?

Ryland: I barely survived, but you’re right. I made it to the other side

[color=purple]Tris: You've really never seen a football game?

Ryland: No! I’m not…really into to sports that aren’t wrestling or martial arts. My parents are still shocked that I’m an athlete for a living. Honestly, the only reason I'm not shocked is because I've been working at it for six years. .

Tris: Really? So you didn’t play football or soccer in high school to prepare you?

Ryland: I didn’t. I took up capoeira because my parents required us to take up a sport. I come from a really, REALLY athletic family. I ended up really liking Capoeira…to the surprise of both me and my parents. I was more of a theatre kid, actually.

Tris: That’s why you’re so good at being mean to children!

Ryland: That’s it! I actually started out in developmental as a manager. So even after I’d gotten hired by the WWF, I didn’t think I’d be a wrestler. It just kind of happened.

Sully: You’re very good at it, man. You mentioned wanting to wrestle Ragnarök? Why is that?

Ryland: I really love wrestling guys who are bigger than I am. I’m a striker and a high flier, wrestling big guys really lets me show that off.

Tris: If you were forced to finish the screw/marry/kill question…what would your answer be?

Ryland: Are your forcing me to?

Tris: We can’t make you do anything, Ryland. Inquiring minds want to know why you avoided the question, man.

Ryland: Okay… I would play a game of table hockey Chanel. I would go to the movies with Cara and I would go get my first tattoo with Deacon.

Tris: Haha! I’m going to pretend you answered the question and move on. Would you ever get a manager?

Ryland: I’ve never thought about it, if I’m being honest. But…I wouldn’t rule it out. If the right person came along and we clicked on-screen, I’d love to have a manager.

Sully: And finally, the last question we ask every guest; where’s the only place in St. Louis you can get morning sports talk?

Ryland: WKYJ!

Sully: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, you guys can catch Ryland on Monday Night Ignite tonight. He’ll be taking on Ellis King.

Tris: Thanks for stopping by. I’ll be in the audience rooting for him. I know some of you guys will be as well. We’ll be giving away two tickets to the show later.

Ryland: Thanks for having me. And it’s always nice to have two or three people cheering amidst the chorus of boos. I’ll see you tonight.

Sully: See you tonight, man.
.

Hey Ladies and Gents, I'm Ezra. I've been roleplaying for about seven years. I started in a wrestling-fed, wasn't really competitive enough to stay interested so I moved into helping out behind the scenes for a few years. For the past two years, though, I've been doing crime drama/mob-type roleplaying. I'm pretty stoked to be doing wrestling roleplaying again and even more excited by the whole angle-fed setup.

There's a lot of really cool writing going on here. I'm excited to see how several of your stories end up. ;-)
